Foods a little slow to come out, BUT the mac and cheese is INCREDIBLE. The fries are absolutely perfect, super crispy and well seasoned. The pecan pie French toast is pretty good (HUGE portion) and the sauce is amazing!
What a wonderful surprise. Been here twice now and the creativity, quality and flavor of their dishes sets them apart from so many others who lack the ability to mix fresh ideas, fresh veggies and diverse proteins with comfort food qualities. So yummy! Service was great once again and look forward to coming back for dinner after two lunches... the cocktails look awesome.
I met with my social group. I didn't dine there. I had two very good house glasses of a red blend wine. Not cheap at $9 at happy hour. But I didn't mind that. What really irritates me is that they added a 20% gratuity to my bill. I do not pay 20% for drinks. Food, I do and usually more. I tipped on the bill. I didn't see they had already added the 20% tip. And, they kept my card behind the bar to keep my tab open, instead of handing it back to me. I hadn't seen a business do that in a long time. I don't go back to establishments that automatically add a gratuity.
I hated this restaurant. Loved the backstory, black owned restaurant that was formerly on the East side of downtown Houston run out of a house. But, when given the opportunity to do it on a bigger stage, it relocated to the competitive Washington Avenue hip restaurant & bar scene. But sadly, all the dishes were too spicy or bland, no flavor for overpriced Asian soul food fusion mix. The service was also bad. I was taken there for my birthday, didn't have a lot of say. I suffered through a menu that offered weird dishes, but decided that the only safe thing was the shrimp and grits entree-bad move-it was bland, the shrimp were nothing special and the grits and cheese was a bowl of nothingness. While a beautiful restaurant, I will never go back or recommend it to anyone. Washington Avenue is competitive, and I wish them well, but overpriced overseasoned soul food with an Asian flair might sound like a great concept, but Restaurant 713 woefully fails to execute the concept on many levels, service, menu and worse of all what they put on the plate was lacking any flavor or soul.
You must get the fried chicken with mac and cheese! It's incredible. They only serve this on Sunday's for brunch so keep that in mind. They use to serve the individual entree but now it's only the family plate. I wish they'd bring back the individual entree but other than that this place is delicious.
