This was such a spiritual experience for me. I volunteered to clean with a few others. This is be a life long commitment. I owe this to my ancestors.
In the past two years our volunteers have made a substantial difference in the appearance and condition of grounds.
Amazing old cemetery. One of the tombstones is dated came to America in 1776. Lots of work had been done to help restore it. When we visited one of the caretakers was present and he told us a great deal about the history of the cemetery. Mr. Cook was an amazing guide and an amazing person. I hope more people visit and more money can be raised for restoration of this important historical site.
More than one half cemetery has been cleared. Standing on the grounds, one can see the Interstate 10 Freeway! We volunteer on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays each month from 8-12 am weather permitting. This is a fantastic volunteer experience.
Incredible historic cemetery where many of Houston's first black settlers & freed slaves rest. Like many (or most) historical sites in Houston, Olivewood has not allows been treated with the respect it deserves. It's a huge disappointment. I know a lot of volunteer efforts have been made to change that which is nice to see. I posted a photo from one of my visits.
This historic place is full of amazing founders and beautiful scenery. The groundskeeper is dedicated and has many wonderful stories.
